A Day in the Caverns

10 Aug

We took a mini day trip with the kiddos a few weeks back, but it was during Tour de Fleece and I never got around to posting about it. So, here it is!

We went to Cumberland Caverns on a Saturday with the kids. Overall, it was good family fun, though not the best trip to a cave I’ve ever been on. Here are some fun pictures for you all to see how cute my kids are:

When we first got into the caverns, the tour guide showed us a few little bats hanging out on the ceiling. They were tiny little suckers, about the size of my palm. Luckily I kept my cool and none of the kiddos freaked out, either. 🙂

Another bat, sleeping on the roof of the cave.

A photo opp of me with the kids, a rare treat! You can see here how it was nice and chilly in the caverns b/c the older two wanted to put on hoodies nearly immediately after getting inside the cavern, and Zack had on long pants with socks the whole time we were in there.

Zack and Will, hanging out on the rocks.

Will and Jilly, hammin’ it up for the cameras.

Zack and I with some scenery.

They also do a little show on the tour there, where they turn off all the lights and they have a chandelier that lights up along with the music. Here are a few shots of that:

Overall, it was nice and cool in the caverns but the tour guide took way too long to explain things and the tour itself lasted nearly three hours (it was supposed to be an hour and a half). It was a miserably hot day outside, and the trip wasn’t the best we’ve ever taken. But you know what? We figured out that it’s okay to take a semi-crappy trip as long as you’re with your family, spending time together and trying to have fun. Family togetherness was the goal of the trip and we definitely got that, so it was a great day. 🙂

In our family a vacation isn’t a vacation (or a trip)unless you visit a (cave).(Cracker Barrel,a yarn shop, and a Fort)We try to find a combination of those while we are out. Did you see any guano? My kids always look for treasure. Your kids look like they had so much fun! I love caves! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, the kiddos had fun sifting for “jewels” in these bags of sand and stones they give you at the gift shop. Now we have a bag full of rocks, some of which are prettier than others, and I have no stinkin’ clue what to do with them. 🙂
